Alone Together,” directed by Tobin Carter

San Diego Short Film Festival

Drama

24:01

With seemingly everyone else on Earth having disappeared, Eddie (Kobi Frumer) searches for others for almost a year before stumbling upon Tony (Harrison Cone), who offers shelter and companionship.

Initially.

Anyone who has ever been in a less-than-healthy coupling will recognize the red flags in this romance metaphor pretty quickly – forced isolation, a mercurial temper, verbal abuse that escalates to physical. It’s to Carter’s credit, with Cone and especially Frumer assisting ably, that every scene is easily predicted but still gripping in some way.

There are places where the story could have easily gone in a different direction, but at each branch we’re taken down the path of least resistance. The best example is an incredibly convenient bottle of Rohypnol, which could have been a narrative time bomb but instead is used exactly the way you think it will be. While the story comes together, and there’s nothing wrong with it, it’s just not the film’s strong point. That’s punctuated by a mid-credits ending that explicitly offers just about the happiest scenario possible.

The serviceable writing is possibly the only indication that this was a student film, as Carter’s direction and the performances are far better than perfunctory. As with Carter’s first post-school movie (“Real Mother”), he shows a penchant for establishing a sense of realistic space and letting his actors inhabit that space organically. Every location looks great and is captured in a way that melts away the artifice necessary to construct a movie scene.

And if you’ve ever uttered something approaching the phrase “not if you were the last person on Earth,” you’ll grok this film immediately.
